South-West firms report "positive hiring" intentions

EMPLOYERS in the South-West continue to report positive hiring intentions for the fourth consecutive quarter, according to survey results released by recruitment and outsourcing specialists Manpower.

The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, based on responses from over 2,100 UK employers, shows that headcount growth is forecast during April to June 2010 - with a Seasonally Adjusted Net Employment Outlook of +5% reported.

The Outlook of +5% is significantly more positive than the national average of +1%, which marks the second consecutive quarter that the national average has remained in positive hiring territory.

Overall, the region’s outlook is unchanged quarter-over-quarter, but is five percentage points stronger year-over-year.

Andrew Shellard, operations manager at Manpower, said: “As a business we’re now seeing increased confidence within financial organisations translate into tangible re-investment in customer service roles.

"This has resulted in growing demand for both temporary and permanent customer service, call centre and business management roles, particularly in the Bristol area.

"However, the region is experiencing a lack of demand for manufacturing staff as the sector continues to suffer as the impact of the downturn remains.”

Mr Shellard added: “The continued positive response from employers in the South-West is encouraging news for the region’s jobseekers, especially as we look ahead to the summer months when tourism traditionally picks up.

"Flexibility is key as competition for jobs across the board continues to be high - jobseekers should therefore continue to invest in training opportunities which will develop their skill sets and boost their appeal to potential employers.

"Temporary work too should not be overlooked - it is a great place to start and often provides a useful springboard into permanent employment.”
